In that situation the pedestrian has the right of way so you are required by law to yeild to them. You think it is better to drive by and have the pedestrian have to wait until there are zero cars?
No, it’s better to stop and wait, and let the pedestrian decide when it’s safe.
Wait you’re stopping in the middle of the road with no light or stop sign to wave a pedestrian across? That’s a good way to get rear ended. Pedestrians. Need to wait for traffic to clear.
Unless you live in Arlington where pedestrians step into traffic and expect them to stop.

This morning, I was driving my dd to school when a teenager to my right arrived at a crosswalk. I came to a stop so she could cross, but there was a car approaching from the opposite direction, and even though the girl started to cross the street, it became clear that the approaching car wasn’t slowing down. Fortunately, the pedestrian was cautious and stopped before stepping into the oncoming lane. I couldn’t believe the other driver wasn’t going to stop for a kid in the crosswalk, even traffic from my direction stopped, so as he reached the crosswalk, I honked at him. He looked mad, shook his head no, and just kept going. I sure hope the girl understood that my honk was directed at the other driver, not her.
It’s kind of amusing when impatient drivers in my neighborhood are frustrated that a flock of geese is slooooowly crossing the street, single file, and so they honk their horns at the geese. Car horns don’t mean anything to geese, so it has absolutely no impact on their behavior.

What if you're really important. Then you honk to let pedestrians know that so they can scamper out of your way.
