We are a black family who has been living in Ashburn for 13 years. We have 3 boys. Live the schools and live out community. My kids have a very diverse group of friends and out immediate community is very tight. Always someone around you can count on.

To be fair to the first PP, OP did say both things which were opposite of each other. "in the DC area" and "need to be within 200 miles" of their jobs. So I can understand the NYC comment.

Virginia because of the range of very good public colleges. Agree with Lorton, Springfield, or if you want to move completely—Richmond area.

If we know what you don’t like about MoCo, that would help in giving guidance.

Bowie is great in many ways but when we lived there most of our neighbors went private, often religious schools. We found it a bit of a bummer because then you lose that community feeling where all the kids know each other and are running around the neighborhood together. It’s harder for the parents to make friends as well when you aren’t meeting at school events, bus stop, etc. But we liked most other things about Bowie.

Are Burke and Ashburn diverse? I’m white and live in Virginia, and I don’t think I’d recommend Virginia. And definitely not further out than Arlington or Alexandria.

Lorton or Kingstowne area. We are an AA family. Laurel hill has a lot of black families and is quite diverse. I was pleasantly surprised.
