Regardless of the recommendation, a kid is going to be stronger applicant with good grades in other electives than with C's or lower in a foreign language.

Is this for Radford?

Good question. My child is not going to do the advanced diploma, so has dropped foreign language in favor of sports medicine (interested in exercise/sports science) and another elective or 2 that will help with college readiness. She might do the physical therapy class through the Academy as a senior (already in a different program, though) and wants to do student Athletic Training, too.

I have a hard time believing they would consider her deficient and not worthy of admission just because she took 2 rather than 3-4 years of foreign language.

You could try Latin. It's pretty easy the first two years.

My DD with ADHD struggled with Spanish but excelled at ASL. I’ve also heard Latin sometimes easier for the kids that struggle with foreign language.

It’s a requirement for the Advanced Diploma in Virginia so if that’s what you’re aiming for you’ll need to find some World Language that will work for your child.

I am sorry-I misread the OP

I saw the “suggested” classes for admissions to Radford and laughed. My kid is taking what she is required to take by the state. She did 2 years of foreign language. If a VA state school that isn’t an honors college is thinking kids need to take more than the state requires for HS graduation, they are crazy

OP, Virginia is a hard one. A college in The State of Virginia, not requiring FL, is a hard find. If someone suggested ODU, take a look. Sometimes by major, the college major does not require FL.. It might be that The Arts at VCU do not require FL.

Otherwise, look to the MidWest. Look for a major in Communication

Most colleges don't "require" HS foreign lang. for admisdion purposes. But, it really depends on the degree/major whether foreign language is required to graduate from any particular college. At UMW, 4 yrs of HS foreign language or three semesters of college foreign lang (or through Foreign Lang 201 -- you might get credit for 101 and 102 if you took some HS foreign lang) is required for all degrees, regardless of whether you get a BA or BS degree (including computer science). BUT, if you go to GMU, foreign lang is not required in the engineering and com sci degrees, but is required for humanities. So it varies by institution and then by program/major.

What do you mean you “can’t” take ASL in HS?
Mine is.

I don't see any language requirement listed on Old Dominion's admissions site. They have a 96% acceptance rate.
