This.

The kids LOVE playing games on the Chromebooks. It’s an easy way to shut the kids up.

Those educational games are wonderful too!

Used to be that MCPS would not introduce Chromebooks until later, around 2nd grade. But now, the kids are on Chromebooks as early as K.

The reliance on screens in MCPS is actually pretty bad in ES. Ask your kid to show you what websites they use and what they enjoy doing on the Chromebooks. It’s pretty eye-opening. Most of the websites are pure trash.

This is a big reason we chose private school. No Chromebooks at all.

Your child will fall so far behind that they will never be able to catch up. My kid in K is already programming on her Chromebook and the interactive math curriculum she's using is amazing!

Your kid in K is already programming? Never hurts to keep dreaming. Interactive math curriculum? ST math? Dreambox? Wow, such novel programs for learning math! Your kid will be so far ahead they'll be tutoring others at Kumon soon enough!

They managed to complete DragonBox and Beast Academy Online earlier in the year but are now working toward an AIME qualifying score.

Uh huh. Sure. My kid’s school teaches programming as well. What they don’t do is sit kids in front of Chromebooks to play stupid games and read “benchmark” books.

Just iPads.

Which my kid barely ever uses. Instead she has real, physical books in a bin for her. She gets to pick them out from the class library.

Also why we chose an independent school! The kids use technology but not as a replacement for instruction. So no, they won't fall behind!

At our MCPS school, they embrace technology to help kids learn in new and better ways while preparing them for the world of tomorrow.

Behind in playing games? Can't they do that at home?

Each parent has a different philosophy on raising kids. The people I know who are the best at academics did not learn using devices. The more old school way of learning is now given schmancy terms like Waldorf, but it’s more in line of my philosophy. Kids and their caregivers can become too addicted or reliant on screens. Anyone can easily pick up how to use Google or how to use a keyboard later in life.

I was worried about this, but as a K mom now its not actually a big deal. in my kids class they use it for a short time in school every other day. The games (starship?) are fun and have a small educational element. frankly my kid does need to figure out where letters and keys are on a keyboard (instead of, say, learning cursive) because that is the reality they will deal with in life.

also the libby app for library books online is great for reading new and different books to my kids every night. i don't see a big difference between using that app and holding a physical book except they can instantly pick out a new one (for free!)

Use of screens in K isn’t universal throughout MCPS. It depends on the teacher. DD was forced to use the low quality Benchmark ebook crap that I wouldn’t use to teach a dog how to read; the other thankfully only used screens to learn things like the alphabet and for testing.

It’s like putting on a kids movie so you can get work done. It keeps large groups of kids quiet and under control.
