OP here. For a dress I likely won’t wear again, the cheaper the better but nothing cheap, under $400 preferably.
I think the linked dresses others posted are great - my MIL wore the black embroidered flowered one to a black tie wedding last May! And i wore a similar one that was navy blue instead of black
I want to suggest finding a navy or charcoal midi-length dress in crepe or another fabric that could maybe give you more future uses for it: and then just dress up with sparkly costume jewelry for this wedding (and then more understated accessories if you can use it again for religious ceremony, graduations etc.)
For the men also, they could do a black or dark suit, white shirt and black tie. No need for a tux, I wouldn't think...

That’s pretty. I’ll probably never need to wear a formal dress again having made it this far, so I’d prefer it to be under $400 but may need to go higher to find something. I’ll definitely look at Anthropologie and will stay away from black, sadly. Since I’m a distant relative I’d like to blend into the crowd rather than stand out.

I don't know that I'd wear the black floral dress OP picked due to it being in May. For a spring black tie wedding, I'd go with something with a little more color. But definitely floor length dress unless you really can't find anything else.

black is totally fine! every black tie wedding i've been to, like, 90 percent of women are in black dresses.

Whoever this PP is doesn't know WTF she's talking about - at least in the United States. Lots of people wear black to weddings. And many of these dresses she suggested are not "formal."
I like the dress you picked OP, and, yes, it's completely appropriate.
+1 I was at a black tie optional wedding last weekend (though it was originally black tie, so many went with it) and I'd say 95% of the women were in dark colors: black and navy in particular. The only light dresses were the BMs. Vast majority were in full length gowns, and those in short were very fancy and put together.

I would go for it-
The length is right, the price is right, and if it fits well and makes you feel good, you will exude the confidence that makes it look great!
Get it early enough so that if you need to have it altered you have time.

You need something that doesn't accentuate the waist which is everything excep gown #6, but that won't look right on you either bc you need to be tall to pull it off.
