Did the girls plan this playdate? Maybe the Mom didn't know until last minute and therefore already had plans.

If you make plans, then follow through. Just like it you make a doctor's appt, you better go or you'll be dropped or canceled.

Obvioulsy, a doc and a playdate is not teh same thing but you are still wasting people's time, expectations and my child's "looking forward" to it.
