Which you'll not experience living in a suburb.

There is the politics and the tradition but there’s also an art scene, amazing restaurants, and vibrance of diversity and personality in each and every neighborhood. It has small town charm even though its a major city.

I have a great house that is literally a part of American history, a huge yard, beautiful plantings, can walk to many things but can get anywhere quickly. I lived in NYC for many years, and still have a great house there but DC is my home and part of me. I would live no where else.

The diversity
The amount of tree cover in much of the city
Rock Creek Park
Public transit and extreme walkability
Free world-class museums
Everyone I meet here has an amazing story and is pretty darn interesting (maybe because I don't work in politics)
The weather - minus the summer
The proximity to other great places on the east coast and ability to fly anywhere in the world quite easily

I love this thread!

I love living here. I feel so confused when people talk about hating it here. There is so much to love.

The walkability and public transportation. Loving life without a car.

I love the very cohesive neighborhoods. Mine is Takoma but I've lived in Mt. Pleasant, Brookland, Chevy Chase and Georgetown over the course of my 20 years in DC. I love that I can walk or take metro everywhere, no need to cross a highway. And great people!

I love that there are Michelin starred restaurants within a 5 min walk of my house! It is so fun to take visitors out and just effortlessly walk back.

Love it here. Came from the PNW where l can’t abide the 6 months of rain. I like the people - educated, liberal, from all over the world. I wish there were big mountains and really close good beaches, but you can’t have everything.

Agree with many of the things people have noted above.

I love my neighborhood, Petworth. It's not perfect but it has many beautiful trees and green spaces (especially Sherman Circle).

I also love that DC is close to 3 major airports!

Capitol Hill
Yards Park/Navy Yard in the warmer months
Good restaurants and takeout
Free museums and zoo
2.5 hours to oceanfront beach.
1 hour or less to beautiful wineries/breweries
Nice hiking trails nearby
