Subject: Honor name for Barbara

Elodie, one of my favorite names, means "foreign" like Barbara does.
B is a letter with a lot of names I don't like, but these are some that are OK

Can Jewish people never name the exact same name as an ancestor? I feel like Barbara is much nicer than any of these other B names (other than Beatrice).

Barbary. I know someone named Barbary.

For Barbara I have heard of Barb, Babs, and Lara as nicknames. Lara was the daughter of another Barbara and didn’t want to be Babette. She also found Lara easier to write. My aunt Barbara was called Aunt Babar when the kids were little, fortunately she loved that book.
I think the honor name tradition is lovely and always enjoy hearing about why the names are chosen.

Babette is a common French nickname for Barbara. I really like Bette or Betty too.

Or would you feel comfortable going with a similar meaning? Barbara means foreigner, would other names with the same meaning be appropriate - thinking of something starting with a B and the same meaning (like Basha, a Yiddish name) or something without the B but the same meaning (like Aliena, from from Shakespeare).

I entertained naming my baby Barbara with the nickname “Berry”. We ended up going with a different family name but Barbara grew on me!

I had a friend whose mother’s name was Babette and everyone called her Babs. She was so much fun and everyone loved her.
