Yes, but they’re also delicious, easy, and comforting. If it’ll make you feel better, dump some cream in there and call it a “gratin.”

They do not have to be fattening or "trashy" (as you put it) OP. It really depends on the ingredients. My friend belonged to the WASPY Junior League + they sold cook books to raise $ for charity with many delicious casserole dishes.

Yes, Mac and cheese is also a casserole.

+1 to all the above

Also, beans and rice, fried rice, etc. Basically different foods cooked together as a single dish, although I’d classify soups/stews separately.

No, not inherently, though I've seen some online that do strike me that way. Think, not a single ingredient not from a can, including things like chicken. Full bottle of Ranch. I make some though and they're basically veg heavy baked pastas for our no meat nights.

Don’t know, don’t care. They are mostly delicious.

No, I don’t consider lasagna, shepherds pie, and Mac and cheese trashy. The lasagna was my favorite thing to order at Filomena’s. What an odd question.

Care to share the recipe you’re making?

Feel free to come at me! I eat up “you’re trashy” comments. It’s part of my enjoyment of all things autumnal, cozy, gloomy, hearty, winter, etc. I’ve come into my time today and…don’t! Stop! Me! Now…

MMMMMMMMMMMMMM NP and I'm making a beef barley soup today but may make this tomorrow as it looks like another wonderful gloomy fall day. Thank you for sharing. I love PW's recipes.

To me, casseroles are comfort foods. They’re warm and filling, unpretentious foods you eat at home with your family. You don’t eat them at restaurants or at parties. They’re what people bring you to make you feel better if you’ve been sick or had surgery or had a baby or lost a loved one.

Love them! I eat a lot of fancy, but a casserole has a special place.
