If you have a library card, download the Libby app. Then you can filter by "Available now" and audio format. We played some random ones on our last trip. My kid also likes to scroll through and make her own choices (we also use Libby for kindle downloads).

But also Stories podcast is great, and as an adult I can appreciate it too.

You might want to pause at points to have a discussion about Ma’s (and the U.S. government’s) views on Indians, immigrants, outdated language, etc. But it makes for a good entry point for those issues.

I think the Kindergartener is too young for these books, especially if you are going to have conversations about how inappropriate they are. I say this speaking as someone who LOVED these books as a child but find them cringeworthy now.

My kids were these ages last year and we took a lot of road trips -- they really liked listening to the Ramona series by Beverly Cleary and Zoey & Sassafras books.

They also liked the My Father's Dragon books and the Mercy Watson series.

Trumpet if the Sean was fabulous as well. Totally captivated both kids (and me, too).

Yes - my kids liked both at that age. Maybe try Bedtime History, too.

We loved listening to audiobooks together in the car at that age! Great shared experience, and m certain that all those audiobooks taught my kids to “read with expression” because the readers were so talented. (It boosted the way I read out loud to my kids, too - I became much more theatrical and expressive! 😂)

We absolutely loved the Nate the Great books, many of which are narrated hilariously by Neil Patrick Harris. (His Rosamond voice is still a family reference point / joke, 5+ years later!)

We also loved Francine Poulet Meets the Ghost Raccoon, by Kate DiCamillo. Beyond funny!

And Mr. Poppers Penguins was great, too. Not as laugh-out-loud funny, but a sweet, fun story that entertained us all on a long drive.

Haven’t read the other posts, but mine loved The Penderwicks on a long car trip right around those ages.
