However, I got terribly sick from that bug and have had cough/congestion for two weeks.

Not Covid. I've had Covid twice and luckily, both times were much, much milder compared to what I have now.

Well, except for the troubling long-haul side-effects which can be life altering.

It's called paying the immunity debt. Kids didn't get sick much for the past few years, and how there is lower population immunity to common viruses. That's why it doesn't make much sense to go to extreme measures to protect your kid from common respiratory illnesses (including covid) and other germs. They get it now, or they get it later, so might as well live your life.

My two ES kids wore masks for 2 years from the onset of the pandemic, until they were able to get the <12 vaccines. They have not been sick or missed a day of school this year.

Mine got covid twice and now have long haul complications.

Can you expand on this? I think my kid is facing something similar.

It’s brutal and I’m so annoyed that sick people don’t stay home or wear masks.

HS teacher here. There are at least three things going around in HS besides Covid. There’s a head cold, a sore throat, and flu right now. It’s to be expected - there’s usually an uptick in fall after a summer not exposed to things, but people haven’t had the usual constant exposure that keeps immunity up for a couple years. It’s going to be an active cold/flu/other stuff season. And yes, I already picked up that cold - first one in 3 years. (And no, it wasn’t Covid.)

1 kid has already been sick twice. Another has been sick once. 1 hasn't been sick, at all. DH got Covid and I got covid from him on day 9 of DH having covid. It all feels like 1 giant clusterf*ck of illnesses, at this point. Definitely haven't been sick since before the lockdown. We all wear a mask. Teachers kept asking for Kleenex, disinfecting wipes etc. Sent in a 6 pack of Kleenex and DC said so many kids have a runny/blowing their nose that they went through 1 box the first day it was sent in. It's going to be a very long cold/flu season!
