Yes but when you say NUT FREE in a school, you mean all nuts including peanuts. Most people only think of peanuts when they see nut free and aren't informed about tree nuts.

I have been to a LOT Of school bake sales. Here is what sells, pretty much in this order:

-- Tollhouse chocolate chip cookies. M&M's even more popular than chips.

--Brownies. The triick is to get a clean cut and package them so they don't smoosh. If you make a double batch of Ghiradheli in a rectangular pan, they come out nice and thick. Canned frosting on them is even better.

-- Cupcakes if they are covered in sprinkles and packaged in a way that they don't end up grossly smushed

-- Sugar cookies that are covered in sprinkles or brightly colored frosting

-- Rice krispie treats, but only if they are really thick and soft looking and so don't look like they are the hard ones that break your teeth

The fancy stuff just sits there until people get desperate. But I'm talking about the bake sales that are aimed at kids (like the bake sale that is running during the school book sale, or during the outdoor movie night) -- not one that is primarily aimed at adults, where things like quick breads and chocolate dipped pretzels sell well.

Add colored sprinkles and you’re good to go. They are really quick and easy.

My grandmother used to make Scotcheroos when I was a kid, and I loved them! (I still love them and usually make a batch at Christmas, though they're very sweet, so a little goes a long way).

Quick breads sell well at bake sales. Can make a couple of loaves and sell individual slices. Banana bread, lemon, blueberry, pumpkin, etc.

This reminds me of the time for Halloween, that I saw someone make them out of Apple Jacks, shaped into balls. When they came out, they flattened them a little, then used chocolate icing from a tube to paint Jack O Lantern faces on them. They cut some green twizzler style licorice cut into small stems on the top. They were very cute.

So you can use Rice Crispie style treats to make a lot of seasonally cute desserts.

I'm sure you could use any other kind of cereal like Cocoa Krispies, sure. My kid brought home one from preschool made with Fruity Pebbles the other day. It was way too sweet for my taste but looked pretty and she liked it!
