If OP was concerned about that she has had years to get an official document that speaks to their support structure. She didn’t. I’m not trying to be a “cool girl”, I’m just efficient and she’s better off saving her lawyer fees, IMO.

The dad can help the child directly. Dad does not need to pay mom who can choose to dole it out or keep it and claim she is the only one supporting the adult. After 18, you don’t owe your kids anything and if dad has no relationship why should he pay to support and adult.

It sounds to me like OP is trying to get 'child support' to help her pay for college, which is understandable, especially if he can afford it and she can't. Good luck OP.

Dad can pay the school directly if he wishes to contribute.

Owed? There's no order so you're talking but not really saying anything but really like to be snarky huh? OP doesn't get to determine what is financially owed to the child - unless she files for child support. The courts can decide what the adult child is "owed" - if anything for 1-2 yrs of support. Good luck with that.

And among other things they will decide her earning power. No matter how you slice it this potentially will be contentious which means expensive and pointless if the kid is approaching age 21.

When you say we live in a state that goes to 21 you need to define we. You and the child or the father as well?

If your state requires child support until they are 21, that's not accurate.

That’s your child’s money. He can use it for college. File yourself. Maybe consult with an attorney to confirm what you need to do.

dad could certainly be expected to contribute to tuition, depending on the state. Talk to an attorney. Figure out the impact on son’s financial aid fafsa if he has any. At a minimum he might qualify for more grant money. Tell your son obliquely that you and his dad have a disagreement about expected college contributions and need a lawyer help to sort it out.

Try this; however, you may have to file and get an order first, so you have leverage, then 'settle' for him paying college directly in lieu of paying you directly.
