We have several parents signed up to be room parent and somehow our 1st grade teacher just didn’t assign one. What do you do if a few parents signed up? I am surprised this teacher still have yet to communicate anything since having a room parent is to her benefit.

Our teacher hasn’t even asked for room parent volunteers yet…

My kid was only in mcps for K thru 2nd but we had no room parents and still did stuff. You would sign up to volunteer at a party or send food or drinks. Everyone has a reason for not wanting to step up OP. I o Lt have one kid, no IEP, but work FT 12 hour shifts that rotate, have a spouse that works nights so I’m solo parenting, on the board for our HOA because no one else stepped up and have anxiety. Do what you can and let the rest go.

Our elementary school didn't allow parties last year, so the room parent was in charge of organizing the holiday gift for the teacher and the end of the year gift for the teacher. Then our class parent went rogue at the end of the year and planned a party outside of school time and invited the teacher. It was a great party. Once the other classes heard about the class party, they pressured the school to let everyone have an end of the school year party, which they decided to allow - but only outside. Hopefully this year parties will return and parents will be allowed back inside the classrooms to help!

I didn’t know they couldn’t exist in MCPS. This thread is eye-opening. My school has always had room parents, and I think all of the elementary schools in our cluster do as well.

If they dont, the teachers handle it.

Actually I do and I have a child who I had to pull out of school several days a week for private services as MCPS was a joke. Having an IEP means nothing. Having to pull your child out a few times a week and get needs met outside takes far more time and yet, I still managed to do a sign up genius and when I got little help, make it work usually for under $50.

Do not put this on the teacher- have the parents rotate so it doesn't all fall on one person. It's called a partnership.

We've had this situation in the past and basically 2 parents took on the responsibilities together to lighten the load some.

I don’t think my kids’ classrooms have ever had a class parent. They have celebrations organized by the teacher or grade level team.

Celebrate!
Any decent teacher will decide on and arrange *some* simple, special events.

How do you know if your kid's class has room parent(s)?
