Because the voters who actually live here and deal with the crazy MD/VA drivers speeding recklessly through our neighborhoods day in/day out are strongly supportive. All the whining and moaning is coming from people who don’t live or vote in DC. Drive the speed limit or stay tf out of our city, I could not possibly feel less sympathy for you.

DC cannot impose points unilaterally on drivers in other jurisdictions. Not sure where you get that from. And any summons they would issue for a camera ticket would be legally unenforceable.

Isn't this understood by DC voters to be targeting MD drivers?
I think it's understood by DC voters are further evidence of the DC government's vendetta against all drivers.

How can you even impose fines if you don't know who is driving? Can't everyone who gets a ticket say it wasn't them, and that it's not their job to explain to the city who was driving?

I have never gotten a speeding ticket in my life. Oh wait, I got one once on Adams Mill Road. Major speed trap. But generally I don’t speed. I go 68 in 65 MPH zones.
But no. You cannot give people points based on cameras when you don’t even know who was driving!

Putting aside the fact that the camera cannot determine the ethnicity of the driver before deciding whether to take a picture of a speeding car, traffic statistics tell us that speed and other forms of bad driving disproportionately affect black communities and kill black people. Would it not be more racist to just ignore the problem? Are the pocketbooks of black drivers more important than the lives of black victims of bad driving?

The cameras take a photo of the face of the driver + license plate. Plus they also record video. I wouldn't be surprised if facial recognition tech is used to match faces with drivers' license photos. If the match is above a certain percentage of accuracy AND the driver is the registered owner of the car, the points are assessed.
I guess wear a mask while you drive in DC?

The ones without points are ascribed fines to the car owner. There would need to be a visual ID to assign points to a specific driver.
