Not enough seats at established universities in the US for all the kids who want to go + wealthy foreign kids.

Same thing happening with Vanderbilt, Tulane, Northeastern, etc and their zoom up the rankings tables (relative to the 1990s when I applied for college).

They are all benefiting from demographic boom + disinvestment in public education + globalization creating foreign wealth.

It has nada to do with course or teacher quality. Too many here busy themselves with chasing status to brag to other parents instead of seeking a good fit or even, sometimes, quality.

A Yalie recently told me that he felt lesser than because he wasn’t in a different program that is more prestigious. He has a happy life otherwise. Just one of many examples of the Prestige Trap.


Selectivity is not a factor in USN&WR ranking.
Hoever supply and demand well applies in general.
If a school is selective, it is for reasons in general.

Agree. I've lived here since 1990 and I've never thought of Richmond as anywhere near Wesleyan, Haverford, Barnard, Colgate, Colby, or Bates in status. Wondering what Richmond has done in recent years to make itself better.
