In VA we can use hours or days to measure the school year. Many school systems would add minutes to the school day rather than end the year later. In MD, they only count days (or at least that was the case when I taught there 15 years ago). The use of hours also allows school systems to add 10 mintues to each school day and have more padding for “emergency” days.

Yes. There is no way to have less days (though we could theoretically have early releases all June I guess if we have extra hours. I’d be game for that!)

I also want to add that eliminating snow days will be like the beginning of pandemic every year and possibly every instance the buildings are closed. Schools close far more than businesses. Last minute decision to cancel school will be a clusterf* with parents scrambling to figure out how to deal with children at home. Remember how easy it was to get K-3 kids to sit in front of a computer for school???

Last time it snowed (Jan. 2022) we were out of power for 4 school days in our neighborhood. It was awful and no way am I using cell data for online school.

Happens a lot here, so this policy is short sighted.
