"Overall" doesn't really count when a child knows what they want to study and finds that a dedicated program exists for it at Georgetown, and not at UVA. Reputationally, GU is strong with grad schools and poli sci / health employment categories. So it depends what your kid is interested in.

Please remember that GU is very selective (11-16%, depending on year and college, but they don't accept common app so it's even more selective than that compared to unis that accept common app). UVA has a 22% acceptance rate. The decision may be made for you, if you see what I mean.

If cost is a factor, then obviously I agree with you that instate UVA is better!

My kid wants Georgetown too, OP, and has no interest in UVA: this is mainly because he wants the School of Foreign Service, and Georgetown does that set of courses better than most. Also, he wants a smaller university.

I want to note here that Georgetown does not have artificially lowered acceptance rates like other unis that use the Common App and solicit aggressively. So bear in mind that it's actually quite difficult to get into Georgetown. Compared to some Common App SLACS and unis, I'd say it's the equivalent of applying to those that have acceptance rates in the high single digits.

From an admissions standpoint, Georgetown is severely underrated. It does not use the common app, has no ED, and is the only selective school that does not favor it’s EA applicants over its RD applicants. If it joined the common app and introduced 2 ED rounds, its already low admissions rate would be cut in half. Overnight.

My Jewish kid is at Georgetown. It is really such a light touch as to be non-existent.

I work at one and graduated (undergrad and grad) from the other. Big questions for a kid considering both:

Do you want to be in a city or in a small town?

How important is campus beauty?

Does your kid want Greek life?

What’s your financial situation? (If you’re full-pay, it would be hard for me to justify Georgetown over UVA; if you’ll be getting financial aid, they’re both need-blind/meet-full-need, so the difference will be in the proportion of loans.)

How do you feel about Georgetown’s Jesuit/Catholic identity? (As a non-religious person who was raised Jewish, I find Georgetown’s ecumenical approach extraordinarily thoughtful and welcoming, and religious life is avoidable that’s your preference. But it is a Catholic university, which means issues like abortion are fraught. Also, the story about the president apologizing is apocryphal. Anyone who tells you Georgetown doesn’t “embrace Catholicism” has an ax to grind.)

I have kids applying to college soon, too, and these are all questions I’m thinking about; fwiw, although I like both schools a lot (and have legacy admissions advantages and financial benefits at both), I think it’s unlikely my kids will apply to either, given their personal preferences. But if cost were more of a factor, I’d happily nudge them toward either.

so yeah The Catholic church is involved. With prestigious Catholic thinkers on its faculty, a 51 percent Catholic student body, strong Mass attendance, and a robust campus ministry, Georgetown is a great place to be for a Catholic of serious faith.

Georgetown attempts to hide its Catholic identity. At a gathering of at one of their facilities, the president apologized about the statue of the Virgin Mary in the room. We crossed that school off our list mainly because DS didn't want to be in DC, but we were glad he did. He's at Notre Dame, which embraces Catholicism.
