I do have anxiety but not about straws. I’ll keep using mine at home.

The kid was sitting on the floor of the deck. Kids fall off chairs as often as they fall off floors.

No, read the linked article again - it says the kid was sitting on the ledge of the dick. Not the floor.

The edge of a deck is the edge of the floor of the deck.

FWIW he could have fallen off the deck onto a rake too. Things happen.

Because you can always control what kids are doing when they have a straw in their mouth……

Same.

Yea, things are just so ridiculous until they happen to you or yours. Amirite?

With all due respect, this was a total freak accident. The biggest danger probably comes from the chemicals the straws leach into your drinks.

I do suffer from anxiety but still use metal straws.

When the metal straw thing first happened, I had a kid who really needed a straw cup due to pretty severe motor difficulties that made an open cup hard. Like many families of kids with severe physical disabilities, i got flack for bringing my own plastic straws, but a metal straw isn't safe for a kid who is immunocompromised like mine was (they don't clean perfectly) or a kid with CP who may have fluctuating tone, or a kid with seizures which are more common in kids with severe physical disabilities, or for other reasons.

This seems like a freak accident, and maybe typically developing kids sitting at a table are safe, but i see kids walking around with metal straws, or riding in cars. Those things are very bad ideas.

How about don’t give kids metal straws if they are fooling around or walking around. Or like they could just drink from the cup like people did for thousands of years.

How terrible! Never used metal straws because they seemed unsafe.
