I just got back from driving out to Bailey’s Crossroads to the Le Madeleine there to pick up the cake. It looks absolutely amazing was about 40 bucks and Hector, the manager there was a complete delight. In fact in the five minutes I waited observing the people working there everybody seemed really kind and on the ball. After we have the cake tonight I’ll report back but so far I’m very optimistic.

We want to hear how you and your husband enjoy the cake. I hope you two become fans of the La Madeleine coconut cream cake

Absolutely disagree. I followed what was probably your recommendation on this exact topic last April. Went to cake room and bought the $50 entire coconut cake for a birthday

The cake itself was over dense, flavorless (white) cake and tasted reminiscent of pure flour, suggesting the batter wasn’t blended

The frosting was 98% fat with horrible oily mouthfeel that left your lips oily. Worse, the cake to frosting ratio was about 1:1. Which is insane - you should never have that much frosting on a cake.

The only thing that made it a coconut cake vs a simple white cake was the sprinkle of wide pretty coconut flakes on the top. They were dried out upon opening the cake box when I arrived home.

I hate to shit on a small business so I never wrote a bad review until today - and the reason I’m doing it now is to save someone else the $50 plus tip*. This is an incredibly expensive homemade and yet awful cake. You’d do better with Duncan Hines or Giant white cake with your own bag of coconut dumped on top.

(side question- why do they need a tip for ringing me up? I did tip ahead of time though)

I don’t normally like coconut cake, but the one at La Madeleine is the bomb.

+1 on Ina Garten's Coconut Cake from Goldbelly. I have sent it out to 4 or 5 different people and it has gotten rave reviews every time. Order it so it arrives the day before the event because it is shipped frozen.

OP here. Super grateful for all the great ideas. Good to know Wegman's and BreadFurst are possible options down the road too. And I am personally a huge fan of carrot cake, so thanks for that too.
