That's what I was going to say. We live in MD for a variety of reasons, but as the kids get older I wish we lived in VA for the broader array of good in-state college options.

I don't know. If my kid smart enough to get into TJ or Blair, I would definitely NOT be aiming for state schools like UVA ( UMD maybe because they have great CS, Engineering programs, great STEM overall; which is the focus of these two magnets.).

NP here. Unless your jobs are completely remote, I would place a higher priority on shortening your commute. The traffic and commute times in the DC region are some of the worst in the country. You want to prioritize being closer to work for the days that you need to go to the office (if any). There are good options, both inbound and magnet in both Fairfax and Montgomery counties, but if you have to spend hours in the car daily for the years leading up to your child(ren) being in high school without even knowing if they will be accepted to said programs, then it isn't worth it.

TJ hands down. Blair is all who you know to get in - or have you been tagged from 5th grade and now I guess also must look like a Benneton ad. In addition as previously mentioned: the universities - so many better options in VA…and UVA is hands down more prestigious than UMD college park.

For Blair, 100 kids are selected from a pool of roughly 8000 each year. Similarly, something like 50 is selected from a pool of 4000 for Poolesville. Basically 150 kis from a grade of 12k kids in the entire county can attend a manget. Not sure how this compares to TJ but its probably worse odds.

The chances of getting in to either are not great enough to base your move on. Think about your commutes and housing budget.

This is not at all true. All of hte magnet kids non-math science, cs classes are regular Blair HS classes with any other kid who enrolls. Also, any Blair kid who has the pre-req can take a magnet class if there is space.
