And sadly Tevin Campbell could not enjoy this same privilege during his music career in the ‘90’s.

If you worked in the lgbtq community—and the lgbtq homeless youth community specifically—you would realize the black and Latino communities are over represented and it stems from faith-based and other cultural beliefs.

I’m not saying whites uniformly accept gay people. But the anti-gay issues in the black community have prompted the continued hiv issues in the black community (down low is a thing created by the black community, and it prompted continued hiv spread when rates dramatically decreased among whites).

Lee Daniels and other notable black celebs and accomplished luminaries are brave enough to acknowledge the rampant black homophobia that persists today. You can’t blame white people for black homophobia. Nobody is saying it doesn’t exist in white culture, but it definitely exists in black culture in a more stark way. How do I know? Statistics. Just look at the over representation of gay black youth who are homeless because their families kick them out. Google it. It’s heartbreaking.

For his age, I think he is still cute.

Of course not as cute as he was when he was 16, but he looks okay now.

Back when he was in his prime (early ‘90’s) it would have been a career dealbreaker if he had come out as gay.

Even thirty years ago - one could not be who they were, they had to pretend to be someone else.
Thank goodness these days it is SO much better.
Frank Ocean and Lil Nas have come out & no one bats an eye.
But three decades ago it was unheard of.
