Its is dark in winter, light in the short summer. Been told by kids that teens who grew up there even have trouble getting up to go to school in the winter. Of course, teens do here too, regardless of daylight. Partying often happens in private homes/apartments bc alcohol is so expensive. Designated drivers are a real thing. Every group going out has one or takes a taxi. Or a spark. The technical university has smart students. Watch Home For Christmas on Netflix not for Tromso but a lighter view of winter in Norway.

Norwegian. The language of Norway is Norwegian. Old Norse was what Scandinavians spoke before the 13th century.

This is beyond absurd OP. Learn Norse???!!! Just apply to a UK school, or Netherlands where classes are taught in English. I promise, having lived in both, they are darker than Chicago and Toronto.

I love Tromso! It’s tiny but relatively sophisticated. There are a lot of students, researchers, sailors, skiers, and fisherman. The last time we were there was en route to a ski trip and the cashier at the cute coffee shop we stopped at was about to leave for a visit to the fairly random US where we lived at the time. It’s as dark and isolated as everyone is saying. It might be the right place for someone who loves fish, the mountains, or is training to be geologist hoping to work in offshore oil at some point. Summers are awesome- look into the rules of land use and camping/hiking, which are basically the opposite of ours in a good way.

No, but the main things to look at, if someone is considering a school like that, is access to housing, cost of housing, access to work permits and jobs, and whether the student can afford it after housing costs and aid and work limitations are taken into account.

What Americans do not understand about northern Europe is that the latitudes are MUCH FURTHER NORTH than even the main cities in Canada.

What that means is that there is little daylight in the winter, and a lot of it in the summer. People who are not used to it can get very depressed, and even suicidal, during the winter months, not because of the cold, but because of the darkness.
