I didn't see anybody on here saying they do/did that. Folks suggested send care packages to share or take room mates out to dinner, etc. Perhaps I missed, but I don't think anyone said they do that.

We often took other kids on my dd's Ivy crew team out to dinner + other parents took her. We did not give gifts until the graduation parties came around.

You should play this by ear and not pre-pack a gift.

If the kid doesn't have parents or if they are gone and YOUR KID WANTS TO invite them to a quick meal and pay. Or take them for coffee and hand them each a prepaid card or something as a surprise and say "now you know a coffee shop - hope you can come back, have fun!"

If they're getting along and you send your kid toiletries, candies, and a few gift cards, include some candy for the roommate.

Don't wrap or plan a gift.

Well, as I indicated in the post, my mom didn't do this stuff. I grew up working class and I sometimes think I missed the playbook on middle/upper middle class life. My parents dropped me off at college and came for graduation. They never attended a single parents' weekend. For example in terms of "missing," housewarming gifts - had no idea that was a thing. So I came here and asked "do folks do this?" but some DCUMers can't just answer, they got to hop in with their judgments.

So, will send a care package shortly. Thanks for the responses.

Not so fast. Keep in mind she may be worse than your daughter, in different ways. Also, my mother always went on and on about what a slob I was. And it was true - my bedroom was a wreck. The second I moved to college, I kept my dorm room neat as a pin. I don't know how or why that was SO much easier, but it was. And I've been neat ever since.
