If there was a toll on 295 the drivers would just cut through the neighborhoods. Too many commuters drive dangerously through residential areas. Why would DC want to incentivize that more by tolling 295?

As long the slew of DC residents who drive their cars out to NoVA and Bethesda for jobs every day also get tolled, I see no problem with the plan.

I would venture to guess that aside from restrictions on accepting Federal DOT funds, this would be the biggest impediment to the plan.

You didn't have to. Virginia and Maryland residents face no punishment whatsoever if they don't pay tickets assessed by camera, because those state governments will not agree to reciprocity with DC.


Does this apply to all auto violation tickets in DC - like parking tickets, camera tickets, speeding tickets, etc?

It is just camera tickets, including speed, stop light and stop sign. These tickets are legally not allowed to be sent to collection and DC has no ability otherwise to enforce payment because neighboring jurisdictions will not enforce these tickets on their behalf. Everyone knows they are a scam.

Parking tickets can be sent to collection, so you better pay those unless you want bad credit.


They can be but very few collection agencies will take them on because there's no profit in it for them unless you have like $25k in tickets.

As for the chances of your car being booted, they are slim to none considering DC has a tiny boot team.

For the same reason every other government taxes others (hotel tax) before it raises taxes on its own people.

You don’t think DC hasn’t already thought of that? They lead the nation with a 14.95% hotel tax on top of a 10% restaurant tax.

For the same reason every other government taxes others (hotel tax) before it raises taxes on its own people.
