Not OP, but The one pair of MarineLayer pants I have look too tight when I first put them on but by midday are so loose it gives major granny bum.
What am I missing there? Any favorites I should try? And I love quince for some things but most of their non cashmere tops are too short for anyone tall/with a long torso. The BR rebrand has nothing office appropriate. I will have to check brooks brothers though- that’s a good recommendation

Everlane and One Quince are my better basics go tos. But I’d kill for an old long J Crew tissue T to layer over a tank top. I miss that. I hate thick t shirts.

Are you joking? What do you think the old j crew consisted of?

Not only is LL bean poor quality but it has zero style for anyone under 50

+ LL Bean is for nerdy naturalists. I have a lot of respect for nerdy naturalists, so don’t come after me, but I don’t want to DRESS like one .

There are a few things each season that are really good. I got a few linen tops this summer that were good quality. The pima cotton mock and turtleneck in black and white are good basics, as are some of the flannels which have different cuts and prints to look less frumpy. True some are old lady clothes but not all. You can mix a few tops and sweaters with trendy jeans and boots from elsewhere. I'm never head to toe ll bean or any other brand. I mix everything.

There is no one stop shop. You just have to find what brand you like and what they do best. You will not like every item from any brand.

Has anyone tried Faherty? Wondering about their quality.
Saw marine layer mentioned above - that was another I like the look of, but wasn’t sure. Thanks!

OP here - me too! tops, jeans, sweaters, pants, jumpsuits. But I'm running out of quality items, and frankly would like something new.

Try everlane, quince, Madewell for some things, Uniqlo, marine layer, vineyard vines, banana republic, and brooks brothers.

Aggressively preppy is my new favorite term!!!! Thank you, PP!!!
(But sadly agree about the downgraded quality of J crew and many others)

J. McLaughlin goes on sale fairly often. I wouldn’t pay full price for the stuff but you usually won’t even need to. If you travel often for work, or, I mean, even if you don’t, the Catalina Cloth stuff is wrinkle free and looks great even if you have to pack it in a suitcase or whatever.

Clearly, “old J Crew” can mean different things.

Classic work clothes? Casual basics? Colorful, preppy?

The brand has evolved from casual with subdued colors in the 80s/early 90s to having a mix of dressy and casual with a rainbow of colors after that. The Jenna years were probably the most famous and what most adult women miss.
