I am guessing they weren’t sitting at a booth a Chick-fil-A. The odds of it escalating to that are pretty minimal in a normal restaurant.

You do not interfere directly and you do not say "wow" because you're provoking an already angry man.

I once accidentally asked a couple for directions in an unknown city, not knowing they were both drunk and in a confrontation. The guy nearly chased me down the street and all I'd done was ask if he knew where I had to go to a certain college.
