Oh come on, that poster was joking! I am sure it IS unusual to bring an iron to college nowadays - I brought one to college circa 1987 (along with a mini ironing board - never mind I had never ironed to date), didn’t once use it, still own it, STILL never use it 😂.

My son got a random assignment. They've texted a bit, and when they were both in the college town for orientation, we all got together for breakfast.
We have two older kids and they hardly communicated with their (also randomly assigned) roommates at all before move in.

Yep: that she's in better shape and better groomed than your daughter.

My niece facetimes daily with her roommate that she matched with on Snap in March--everything is coordinated, etc.

my kid met a kid on Discord, "matched" in that they both were in the same extracurricular in high school, and told me that we were bringing the microwave. that's about it, as far as I know.

My oldest DS did a random roommate. When he received his dorm assignment/roommate from the school, I nagged DS until he finally reached out to the roommate to ask about a fridge/microwave. If I hadn't pestered DS constantly, he never would have contacted his roommate.

My middle DS is an athlete at college and the coach assigned teammates to live with each other. The coach had a couple of virtual meetings before school started, so the guys "met" each other. But it was still painful trying to get DS and his roommate to talk/text about any roommate things.

Daughter: spent a month essentially online-dating a bunch of girls to find the perfect roommate then snapped and texted often to coordinate room furnishings and get to know each other. The girl turned out to be a total ass that lied constantly and alienated everyone and Covid causing early move out that year was a blessing.

Son: finally logged onto the patio app the week housing apps were due, found a guy that seemed like he wasn’t a total dweeb and exchanged a bare minimum number of introductory texts before popping the question and it was a done deal. They have since chatted maybe twice to figure out who was ordering the micro fridge and who was bringing the rug. All they really know about each other is where they live and that they needed a roommate. I’m sure they’ll be best friends.

DP: my son has 2500 students in his high school. He knows by sight a hundred kids, max? Being virtual didn't help these last few years.
He'll go to college and probably have a closer relationship with the other students than he's had since middle school.
