You're cherry-picking the data in a laughably transparent way. Per the Census Bureau data you linked, the per capita (not HHI) income in Bethesda is $100K compared to $77K in Vienna. The median home value in Bethesda is $928K compared to $778K in Vienna. The percentage of the adult (25+) population with bachelors or higher degrees is 87% in Bethesda compared to 69% in Vienna. Those are material differences. Within Virginia, McLean's figures are closer than Vienna's to Bethesda's, as others have noted.

The other issue is that the Census Bureau data for Bethesda is for the entire Census-Designated Place (CDP) of 68K people, whereas for Vienna it's only for the Town of Vienna, of 16K people, and excludes the Oakton and Dunn Loring CDPs which contain a lot of Vienna addresses and real estate. And the income, wealth and education data for those two other CDPs are in some instances (even) lower than the Town of Vienna.

That doesn't mean Vienna is a slum, or that some people might not reasonably prefer Vienna to Bethesda. But extravagant claims that it's as wealthy as Bethesda, which is now one of the wealthiest suburbs in the entire metro area, are just silly and honestly misleading for the OP.

Sorry, Vienna just isn't on the radar for people who are actually snobby and social climbers with $$$. Once they have the $$$, they'd be looking to buy a new McMansion in Mclean/Bethesda or something more urban (if they are into it) before looking into Vienna. And for those who aren't social climbers, they are just looking for what's convenient to where they have to be daily (commutes, or family, etc) and lifestyle. And I do not disagree that there are people with $$$ in Vienna, and there are nice homes, it's just not the attraction for the true snobs. I think some people confuse snobs with those who are cliquey and maybe a bit smug about being happy with their circumstances and patting themselves on the back for making the right choices for themselves.

HHI doesn't mean much, especially in places where there are high networth families that don't work for a living in traditional sense and where there are also mixed use communities. Also, generational wealth matters too

The main drag of Bethesda, Wisconsin Ave., is a mess but tolerable. Chain Bridge Road in Vienna is a real mess. It took me a hour to get from the town line to Nutley one day, and that was not unusual. Lots of sketchy business along that road.

lol. When we were looking to move to the burbs from the city our agent pushed Vienna hard. We needed to be as close and convenient to DC as possible, so weren't considering Vienna. It felt like boonies to us. Even Mclean felt like boonies
