a lot of portuguese people in the US are from the azores, which drives prices super high in the summer. New England in particular hence the nonstops to the islands from boston. if you go in the shoulder season it can be like 350-450 a ticket r/t non-stop

Maybe it depends on if you're eastbound or westbound. I know when I fly from the west coast to the east coast it's 4.5 hours. East to West is painfully long - an extra hour!
