I think it’s fine, I don’t think a lot of people are using half day camps as working parent child care. Assuming it’s 9-1 or something, by the time you drop the kid off and then pick them up in the afternoon you’re really not getting that many child care hours out of it anyway.

I would feel like it was a waste of money for me though if I didn’t send my kid most of the time.

I don't and none of my teachers friends do. I don't make a lot of money so if I pay for a camp, my kid is going every day.

I work in a Title One school and most of the parents work at night cleaning offices, etc. The time their kids are in school is the only time they have to sleep. Not everyone work from 9-5.

Anonymous wrote:You are making a big assumption. Affordable day camp here is very limited and it's often difficult to find an all day offering. A parent could enroll their child in a half day morning camp and this as the afternoon camp. If you are going away on vacation I think that's fine but if you are simply not sending your kid because you don't feel like it then yes you are wasting a space for another parent.

I think that’s totally fine, unless you accepted some sort of financial assistance to have your child there which could have supported a child that would have used it more. I do this with REC classes.

Ultimately you’re doing other parents a favor because there are fewer kids for counselors to watch.

It’s fine.

If I’d wanted my kid in that camp and knew others were doing what you describe, I would be a bit annoyed. But camps fill up and the spot is rightfully theirs, so what are you gonna do? Just find another camp, I guess…

What's the issue here? As long as you're paying, who cares how long your kid goes?

I would feel bad about it. Missing a day here or there or skipping a Friday to travel for a long weekend, fine. But I don’t think it’s in the spirit of these camps to use them how you’re describing

Every teacher I know does this over the summer.

If it’s a subsidized camp that got snatched up quickly and has a long waitlist, then yes, it’s wrong. But if there was still space or it took a while to fill up then whatever. You don’t need to explain why you didn’t come. Some kids don’t do well in camps anyways and you might need to quit early on

I think it’s wrong if there was a waiting list or other families who could’ve use that spot.

Of course it's fine. No worries.

I live in the city in a neighborhood with a lot of low income families who really need more childcare options. So yes, I would feel very guilty if I did that.

Is it intended as a drop-in?

Fine. They are there for that reason.
