I am an older woman, who doesn't see "ads" of women in skimpy clothes as the way forward.

My DD showed me the Instagram for incoming freshmen where lots of kids were introducing themselves and looking for roommates. There were a lot of bikini pics, formal pics, my guess is girls send in photos where they think they look attractive. Also noticed a lot of kids send in pics showing them in a group - sometimes hard to figure out which is the kid who posted. I think girls do this to show they have cute friends. Also lots of pics with the boyfriend. My DD sent in pics of herself alone, no bikini.

They are already auditioning for sorority rush. This is how the game is played.

There are studies that show female college students believe consent must be verbal, but a shockingly high proportion of male students say consent can be communicated by dress.

This is not fair, but it is true.

I was recently in Europe and saw SO many young women wearing practically NOTHING (see through skirts with thongs, skirts so short that they absolutely showed their crotches, shirts so low cut that all of their breasts short of nipples were out there). As the mom of a daughter, I was creeped out by the thought that sleazy older men were undoubtedly staring and getting off on this. Let alone predators and misogynists.

I don't know if competition on social media or pornography/fashion ads are driving this trend. But it is sad and dangerous. Men continue to walk around the world without revealing the size of their private parts. Why oh why do women not realize that they lose the ability to be taken seriously as whole people when they lead with their breasts/rear ends. It will not attract the right attention or men.

OP here. I remember my college days, and saw how girls who signaled, were sometimes targets of guys looking for a good time. It was not a pretty scene. Just not the right message at all. Definitely steering my kid away from this crowd.

Having lived what I did in college 25 years ago… I do feel like these girls still think this is a game and don’t know what’s about to hit them. Maybe college boys have evolved since then, I don’t know.

I don’t use social media. I said I advised my son. I see it live at my home when his friends are in the pool or in front of mirrors snapping selfies. I’ve known these kids since they were in pre k. Constant photo ops and selfies. I walked into kitchen and said, really?? when they were baking brownies and provocatively licking the batter off the spatula while recording a live story. Giggles all.day.all.night. The guys are oblivious and on their phones. They’re 18-19. Any younger is a no go at my home.

I thought this same thing last year when I joined a few insta class of 2026 pages just to see who was posting for each school (i have a 2022 HS grad). I thought it was weird (as a middle aged woman) but whatever!
