I’m Asian and was interested in DCPS but DCPS has made it abundantly clear that they tolerate white kids, care about AA kids and don’t give a damn about Asians. I don’t really think they care about Latinos either.

Curious why you feel this way.

Stop giving this woman bad advice, folks.

We are IB for Stuart Hobson/Eastern and a commute to NW would be tough but I suggest continuing with it. I chose not to send my kids to SH but if I was in a situation of not having a choice I would send them there. If I didn't have a choice other than Eastern we would absolutely move. It's simply not a good school. Deal/Wilson is a gift if you are not in bounds. Keep it.

You sound white, or AA, PP.

A commute is worth it for our Asian kids. Where are the Asian students at SH?

Pretending that we're white, black or Latino sounds a tad "soul destroying."

in my view, a very long commute to middle school is soul crushing for parent(s) and child and not worth it. sh is a decent school. i wouldnt commute across town to avoid going there.

I wonder how kids get challenged anywhere at all, really. Isn't the curriculum standard across all these schools no matter what?

Yes, if you're a low SES minority. If you're high SES, total BS.

This and everyone knows Deal is by far the better performing school.

Lately? Meh. The behaviors and skipping class were insane this year.

They’re insane everywhere. I just read a national report on the issue. It happened at every school, across every race and income. Deal was not unique at all.

OP. Does your son have any friends that he can take a bus with in the morning? Your son’s friend’s house might be an easier commute than going to Deal. Like the Deal bus stops in Columbia Heights or 16th St Heights? Or can he Metro to Deal?

Stick with Deal. Unless you think Eastern is a viable high school option

SH is a great school that offers advanced English and Math to include geometry in 8th grade. The size of the school ensures that a student isn't just another number. Sports, debate teams have excelled on a regional and national level. The challenge for high school is real and the DCPS process isn't great. Lots of kids heading off to Walls, Duke Ellington, Banneker, Bard, McKinley Tech, but If not, plan for private or move into the NW quadrant of DC. Unfortunately, there isn't another neighborhood as dynamic as Capitol Hill but kids do disperse for 9th grade as a result of not having a stellar high school feeder.
