“You have been so generous in inviting us to stay at your home. However, I’m just not accustomed to the heat/sleeping on a sofa/whatever. I don’t want to put you out in any way, so DS and I are going to stay in a hotel/get a place on Martha’s Vineyard/head home early.”

I am planning to ask for a yoga mat and a sleeping bag (they are outdoorsy) for my kid though, and maybe I will just sleep upstairs in the living room with AC.

Op, didn't your parents teach you and your brother ~ guests should be there more than 3 days. Remind him (even if your parents never said it). Meanwhile, Op why do they get to decide? Seriously, act on what you think would be best.

Is it just that you don’t want to be in their house that second week? (I assume it’s not their company since you were planning a road trip with them)

You and your son can go on shorter road trips/overnights even if they won’t. Try places in NH, Maine, RI - all just fine for one adult driver.

Are the day trips they’re considering really that bad?

I will be honest. I find your posts confusing. So it is hard to come up with any real advice. You can't do a road trip, but are complaining that SIL doesn't want to go to NYC or Acadia which are FAR from Cape Cod. I am guessing that you are not a great communicator (maybe SIL isn't either). As others said, just plan what you want to do and let them know your itinerary. They can choose to go or not.

You need to stop worrying about what they want and just plan something that works for you and your kid. And just say: Since I have limited vacation and already have our plane tickets booked based on this plan, we’re going to go ahead to the XYZ road trip on our own, but we’re looking forward to our time together before that!” Make your plans first and then tell them - you don’t need their permission!
