Op here. I feel like DS’s safeties are actually not true safety. I think he won’t be happy if he ends up at a true safety, which is why I thought it may be better to apply to a lot of schools that are low reaches/targets.

If your DC has very high stats (top 5% of class, most rigorous classes and 1500+ SAT) and also hopes to go to a highly rejective college, they might be in the zone where they decide to apply to a lot of colleges. It’s a numbers game, and while there is a lot of correlation among acceptances, the more applications, the higher the chances.

If that’s your kid’s hope, then tune out all the people who will surely respond here that there’s no point. When they say if you’re rejected by Harvard you’re also likely to be rejected by Yale. What matters more is that your kid is likely to be rejected by each of these schools, but the more applications, the higher their chances.

The ED and 2 of the EA were acceptances; she pulled the other 2 EA apps once she got the ED acceptance

Would maybe have applied to 2-3 more if the the ED had been a no.

Three were rolling, with acceptances in hand by mid-autumn.
Declined two of the (RD) waitlists, stayed on the third until June 1 when the WL closed.

4 Reaches, 6 Targets, 4 Safeties = 14
Aside from the CA essay, I think DC only wrote maybe 6 supplemental essays. None of their Target schools had supplements for some reason.
In at all but the 4 Reaches.
Merit Aid from all but two Targets.
Absolutely loved one of the Safeties.
Chose a middle Target, not the “top-ranked” one, but the one that felt like the best fit.

1st kid applied to 5, only one highly selective. Got into all but that one.

2nd has list of 7, mostly matches and safeties. Again, one highly selective reach.

Keep in mind that many schools require their own essays/paragraphs/statements in addition to the common app personal statement. So, 50 applications would most likely turn into a LOT of writing work.
