OP here. Thank you all! I love the suggestions, the warnings, and the reassurances. It’s not the beach week I would choose, but thanks to you all, I think it’ll turn out just fine.

Steel Pier is ok. I much prefer OCMD boardwalk. Drive across the Longport bridge and eat dinner at Somer's Point (Smitty's is a personal fav) and then go to the OC boardwalk at night. Lots of rides, carnival games, and no trouble because OCNJ is a dry town. Manco and Manco pizza is the best. Shriver's Fudge. Johnson's Popcorn. Kohr's ice cream. There is $5 mini golf courses right on the boardwalk that are a lot of fun.

AC can be scary. I would avoid the beach as people said. But Steel Pier can be fun for kids. Try to get a sub from White House Sub Shop. There is also an aquarium and a historic and large wooden elephant called Lucy that is fun for kids to visit a few miles away.

Beaches like Margate, Longport are nearby but kid-friendly beaches include Ocean City NJ (really fun boardwalk with rides and arcade) and Cape May is a bit farther but very historic with Victorian architecture.

On the mainland, they might enjoy Storybook Land.

Op, where are you staying in AC? If you are on the boardwalk somewhere you will be fine. I like staying somewhere between Caesars and Ocean (so the north side). You have a huge arcade for kids in the Showboat (they removed the casino and turned it into an arcade). Sugar Factory in the Hard Rock. Steel Pier is right there as well. Margaritaville has a beach restaurant/bar at Resorts.

I've never had an issue with the beach there. Pick a spot near the lifeguards and you should be fine. That said, the water is cold until mid-July or so.

You can also take the kids to see Lucy the Elephant
