It wasn’t an option for me. Statistics is a very useful course of study for any future leader or anyone who just wants to have a more in-depth understanding of the explanation and interpretation of data. I can’t imagine many people who advance in corporate, white-collar jobs who don’t analyze some type of data on a regular basis. Starting that foundation earlier may help that journey.
Totally agree! I took Calc AB and a Junior, but had no interest in BC, so I took AP Stat my Senior year and it was a great, relevant class, and was actually useful for someone who was not interested in being a math major or engineer.
DS got a 96 on IOWA and 535 on SOL. Definitely taking Algebra next year.
+1. This is what kills me about the Algebra in 7th grade naysayers. If your kid is in band/orchestra, it's nearly impossible to free up an elective slot to take AP Stats. Taking Algebra in 7th makes it possible for a kid to do both one year of AP Calc and one year of AP Stats without needing to waste an elective slot on the stats.

In my private school, we all took Algebra in 7th grade as just a normal thing. You all are acting like it's Calculus III. It's literally x^2 + 2x -3 = 5. So scary...
Not worried about Algebra I. Worried about kid having to do Matrix and Multivariable as a senior, both of which I think are best learned in college (along with Calc), and probably completely unnecessary for anyone not wanting to go into hard sciences/engineering/math.

I didn't find matrix and multivariate harder than basic calculus. Matrix is an annoying class for some reason, though. IMO all kids should take statistics in high school (then probably again more in-depth later in college)

We asked the teacher what he thought. He said without a doubt our kid should take Algebra in 7th.
DD got higher scores in both, and when I asked the teacher, she basically gave me a pro-con list!
Can you share her pro-con list?
It’s a little long, but boils down to these:
Pro
1. Understands material easily and thoroughly
2. Has an excellent support system with friends that help each other, and will be taking the class together
3. There are no penalties for dropping back to Math7H if the going gets tough
Cons
1. Lacks confidence in her abilities
2. Will the workload be too much, when accounting for her not insignificant ECs?
3. How much if a role is ego playing in these decisions?
