Algebra2 is harder. They need higher intelligence to understand the concepts and they need to spend more time to do questions. The higher level the math, the more obvious the difference you’ll see among the students.

What makes Algebra 2 H so hard for kids who do well in math? Everyone kid I hear about aced Algebra 1 H and Geometry H, then they get to Algebra 2 H and get anywhere from a B- to B+. What is it about that course?

To me, it sounds natural that the kid is unhappy with her first A- in 8 years and is willing to get rid of this record. It's like you have a white skirt and has a dirty drop on it. It takes her a little while to overcome the negative feeling about it.

I get it. My kid got a A- in 7th grade English and it’s only non A or 4 since kindergarten. He felt bummed over for a while, but gotten over it. It’s covid time and he screwed up his every first book report as he did r know how to do it and didn’t ask for help either. He tired really hard to make up it, which he sort of did but fell short by 0.3 or so to an A. He even requested teacher to give more assignments, but fcps reduced homework/tests during covid and wasn’t enough. Oops. In any case, it’s to everyone has to go through occasionally disappointments and it makes us humble.

Op I think you may need some help too. The fact that this was even a question for you is kind of concerning.

A- is pretty good and definitely not worth re-taking the class. Instead, let DD focus her energy on Pre-cal HN. Is your plan to re-take every HS course that didn't have an A? How do you think it will end? It will be depressing and un-motivating to re-take a full year course all over again! Please don't push her and let her relax and enjoy her education. Please don't sacrifice the childhood for an A.

It's always hard for the first A- when all other courses are A. She accepted it now.
She hasn't spend much efforts on school work so far. So it's nothing about sacrificing the childhood. But starting from Algebra II HN, she realized that she probably needs to be more serious with her study.

It would be so much better for her to take precalculus this summer through a private provider. Then retake if next year. That way she has a very good chance of getting A’s in pre-calc next year.
