No. The new regulations have to include money to invest in buying back the illegal weapons. There are places where this has been done successfully.

That is the ban that needs to come back. It was not overturned or voted on - Bush just let it expire - and that is a big reason why we are in this mess.
And it will be impossible to bring it back with gun rights electeds more staunch than ever in their positions and desperate need to retain in power.
I wouldn't be too sure. Millions of single-issue voters just got created watching the myth of the "good guy with a gun" get destroyed and replaced by the absolute horror of 4th graders murdered by someone who should have never been able to get his hands on an AR-15, while parents screamed helplessly outside as they were held back and prevented from saving them. Every parents worst nightmare, an unimaginable evil - and no reasonable justification for the conditions that allowed this to happen remain. I've gone 50 years with zero interest or engagement in politics - but I'm putting my money where my mouth is with this issue, and am not afraid to speak out. Enough.

You fit in. Those things would be so a lot, wouldn’t they? It’s not too much to ask.

Honestly, you worry about that another day. First step is just restricting the sale of new assault rifles. That has to be the initial focus- just get back to where we were pre-2004 with sales/manufacturing. This singular focus- one that doesn’t actually take anyone’s current property away- is easier to rally behind and may be more widely accepted.
