YL kids have FUN. there are worse groups you can get involved with in high school.

Only positive experiences from friends and family members that were involved. Unfortunately, I grew up in an area where there were no YL chapters.

But on the other hand it was better than hanging out with these people when they were drunk at parties with alcohol.

It's for people who like to party and be Christian at the same time. If you aren't that swayed by religion it's a good place to meet people and hang out. I don't trust any of their religious stances. It glorifies partying actually by all of their testimonies as recovering alcoholics. And there were definitely two faced people in the group because what of it. Just get up and speak your confession and all is well. But they tend to be a social group. Sometimes I wish I had gone to camp to party with them. It looked like fun. It was all too fake for me though.

When I was in HS in the late 90’s young life became popular around prom season for folks trying to find a date.

About 10% of 21 year olds are married (https://flowingdata.com/2017/11/01/who-is-married-by-now/). I knew people that were married and divorced by 21, FWIW. The numbers are low, but it's not "nobody" and it's much more common among the crowd that Young Life attracts (although probably still not common there).

A family friend who lived in an off campus YL house at a big state university has a summer full of weddings and being a bridesmaid. I mean at least two a month. Most have just graduated and a few graduated last year, used senior year as engagement year. All are under 25.

PP here.. I got married at that age, to a YL model party boy (who grew into a raging violent alcoholic and left me). Plenty of our peers married and are marrying that young. We don’t need high-paying jobs! Our parents pay for everything.

Are they still kicking out leaders for being gay?

DP. I know this because I was part of Young Life and Campus Life. They are evangelical training programs.

I’m PP who mentioned the kids my own DC knew were partiers.

In my suburban world, YL leaders are the cute, young attractive teachers and coaches. Parents with grand homes and yards are often asked to take on a leadership role within YL and get to “host” for leadership AND youth gatherings.

Great way to socially engineer your DC life - get the YL teachers and coaches And send your kid off to party at a YL camp.

I say all this and I had my first cigarette at Girl Scout camp in 7th grade and left the Catholic Youth Organization dance early to join my date to drink coolers in the church lot. My parents thought I was involved in while some activities.

I was suspicious when my oldest DC initially wanted to join YL then came back to report that this wasn’t going to be her crowd of kids…she always said they were the partiers.

As a Fairfax County kid growing up in the 1980s, my ultra strict Catholic, Jesuit-educated father would not allow me to attend YL, although I was often invited. He knew of the organization as “anti Catholic” and evangelical.
