Most likely, the kid was not actually ready earlier-it's not like they are ready and then at age 3, readiness expires and they become witholding, impacted pyschos.


That actually does happen. They get older and develop a preference for the way things are now (ie, their diaper). I’ve seen it happen, then it’s a long road back to willingness.


That’s what I have noticed too. They become more strong willed and decide what they want




This is why Oh Crap pushes to do it earlier. 3 year olds are willful and opinionated. MUCH More so than 20-26 month olds. If your 3 yo decides they don’t wanna potty train, they literally hold all the cards.


Except, not all kids are ready at 20 months. Then you end up with posts like ' we've been potty training my 23 mo for 3 months and only had 5 pee and 3 poop accidents today'.

Too old? Like diapers for life? Lets not be dramatic. I trained my #1 at 3+ and it was nothing harder or long about it. It mostly related to the timing related to daycare. My #2 was about 14 months at the time. She just jumped in and started using the potty too! It was all about getting the m&m! No way #1 was getting something #2 was not. (and they came only after hand washing for us)

OP: yup, right in the bathroom. On the potty, while she’s using it. Sometimes I line up the M&Ms directly on the toilet seat to get her to sit down.

OP here. I won’t argue with the commenters about the risks of waiting cause I know it *can* backfire, and those in the trenches have my sympathies. I do think that firstborns can be the difficult ones? With my second/third, the motivation to be like their big sister/friends was pretty strong. Like I said, kids are weird.

1 m&m is a really. common reward. No need to eat them in the bathroom! It ends up being a few m&Ms for a couple of days.

congrats on the win! to improve nighttime training, consider the suggestions above. Also consider waking your littles up to potty once during the night. Keep the bathroom light on. Eventually they will wake up and go on their own.

First of all. 3 and a half is old to potty train. Also - I have potty trained a bunch of kids. Never have I ever given them candy as a reward. Just gross. Eating m&s in the bathroom? A different drive should push kids to go to the bathroom. Not candy. Just my honest opinion.

I made the mistake of listening to posts like this and it took my then three year old a year to toilet train. Never again. Second kid trained in one day at 23 months. She just watched her little friend pee in her potty and that was it. She’s been in underwear since that moment and never has accidents.

I feel so bad I waited with my oldest. Poor kid.

Doesn’t make it likely. Just more common, but not likely.


The experts used “likely”. It’s a whole psych-sociological reason behind it. The desire to defecate away from the tribe if part of it as well as a child who’s always felt the poop stay close to his body is sometimes traumatized but it falling away. And definitely the standing up which worsens constipation and kinks the lower colon.

Yay for you. All kids are different, yet everyone ends up potty trained.


That’s actually not true. Toileting issues are quite common and some kids never achieve toilet independence.
