Up to date on shots? Is she a dog? You're gross and nosy, OP.

I disagree completely. She lost 100% of the income. She would have taken another job. I do think the policy is reasonable and something I have done (paid in full) without being asked.

I don’t think it’s reasonable either. I think a 24 hour policy with 100 percent pay for what she was hired for is more standard. If I only hired her for two hours, why should the cancellation policy lock me into four?

Pretty sure OP's sitter wouldn't accept your two hour care gig. Shoot, I don't think most sitters will if your intent is two pay two hours' worth.

Reminds me of my college sitter days. Lots of last minute cancellations for date night on a Friday or Saturday, the evenings when I would have multiple families asking for the same date. A few would insist on sending a fee or tip well on the next date, but most didn't care or realize how much I depended on that $$ for monthly expenses. I think the policy is completely understandable.

because four is her minimum. It’s not worth her time to work for two hours.

I haven’t heard of it before but I do agree with it. Years ago I had a family reserve me for several Tuesday evenings. They said they wanted me to be available to them then if they didn’t need me after all they sound pay me my minimum ( 3 hours). Now we have a sitter HS age if we don’t need her on a day we’ve already booked with her we pay her anyway if we tell her the day before or the day of. Not everyone does though. I’m assuming your sitter got screwed a couple of times by thoughtless parents and that’s why she started this policy.

No. But I might be ok with this for my best sitter, who is truly exceptional. When I cancel with sitters I tend to book a rain check day - "let's do next week instead," etc.

I would be and am fine with this policy. I have two easy kids as we don’t go out until they’re asleep and we aren’t the “hire a teenager” type. Our sitter has a three hour guarantee and 100% cancellations policy from booking. She’s an adult and this is her livelihood. I respect that.

Hire any educated nanny or nurse as a sitter and you’d have the same arrangement.

+1 I have an "easy" child and a rotation of good reliable sitters so yeah I wouldn't use this particular sitter. Suppose this would work for other families with high needs or who otherwise have trouble finding a sitter. The attributes in OP are pretty standard for a sitter position clean background, non-smoker etc , nothing jumps out as extraordinary.

I don’t think she is wrong. I get it.

But personally, I wouldn’t be ok with this. I’m fine with the neighborhood teenager that doesn’t have a bunch of client rules. It’s bad enough when MIL babysits. Plus we aren’t usually gone 4 hrs. I’m not paying $100+ to the sitter for a two hrs out at dinner

Our sitter is our nanny and although she has never stated her policy, we absolutely pay her when we have to cancel. It’s sad your sitter had to state a cancellation policy. Clearly parents cancelled on her last minute and she lost needed income.

OP. Yes, it does make me think less of her.

As it should, OP. Good for you.

+1.

We have had to cancel our cleaning lady on short notice and paid in full. It’s just the right thing to do. I don’t see why a babysitter should not make it a policy?
