When my DS was young, he wanted to learn to read early. The game changers for him were sight words and eventually Bob Books.

Me again. Also, I let him watch Sesame Street daily and I keep the subtitles on because I need them for when I watch stuff on HBO and am just too lazy to switch them on and off. He has said repeatedly the subtitles helped him figure out reading.

This might be anti-DCUM but the only time we let out then three -year-old start watching screens was for Letter Factory and Hooked on Phonics. He was so happy to be watching TV that he picked up reading easily and so happily by the time he was four!

When our Kinderguy was having trouble with reading, we used the Alphaphonics book, along with some magnet letter manipulatives we got from Amazon. It worked very well.

We’re going to use the new Hooked on Phonics. It’s how my mom taught me to read at 3.5.

Just keep reading to him ALL THE TIME -books at all levels. And then point out simple words and make the sounds really slowly. You could try Bob books but I would definitely not do some program. It may backfire and make him dislike it or think of it as work. If he already knows his sounds and letters at 3? He’s going to come to so easily and your job is to keep it enjoyable and fun and to KEEP READING TO HIM even once he knows how to himself. Picture books that he is “too old for” and weird ones that you hate but he loves and chapter books and comic books. Keep comic books around- Garfield is super easy, not much text, the jokes are simple.

Another vote for the old Letter Factory dvds! I stuck them in for DS just to give me a break and he learned to read!
