This. You rarely see them outside major cities, particularly blue areas.

They are very much a liberal voter car.

We will see what happens with Twitter.

I will say our friends who bought one early one have used it to really reduce carbon footprint. They now almost never fly domestically -- they take their Tesla and plan routes using the super charger stations. This obviously also helps justify the cost to them, because it's thousands of dollars in flights they aren't paying for anymore, as they travel quite a bit. I think good for them for being willing to do it. They've also had the Tesla for close to a decade now, so it's not just a fad for them.

But I'm guessing most of the Tesla owners I see now are not using them to replace plane travel or holding onto them for a really long time. I think it's become a bit of a status symbol for many. But at least it's a status symbol that doesn't use gas, I guess.

Um, Tesla stopped being a status symbol about 4-5 years ago. It's about on a par with an Audi A4 base model at this point

It's about to be on par with a pickup truck sporting a trump flag.

We have the three and only paid a few thousand for it because we traded in our Prius and got a bunch of the tax incentives. With what we save on gas and maintenance, it's definitely a cost saver. (Lots of places even have free electrical charging.)

There are things I like about it -- it's very comfortable, drives well, is reliable, and I love never having to take it into the dealership (upgrades are done remotely, and if you need service, they come to you). There are things I don't like about it -- the whole flat screen control panel is, I think, really stupid. And I hate how they often change things around when they do the software upgrades. Our second car is a hybrid minivan. I'm glad that more manufacturers are getting into the electric business. But Tesla still has a major advantage in the tremendous chain of superchargers that he put all over America near the highways. It makes it so easy to travel in a Tesla -- the Tesla tells you where to stop and for how long to minimize your charge time. Because of that alone, I'm reluctant to move from Tesla to a different electric vehicle charger.

They are hugely popular in California. I don't think they make as much sense in places like Maine, Montana, Nebraska, because electric batteries lose charge in very cold conditions.

Once you have an electric car, you realize how loud and stinky gas cars are.

But Musk is not known for his coolness, and his cars are not elegant machines - they're the bland, lowest common denominator for rich people.

Which is all perfectly fine.

We have two Teslas. They aren't status cars. We bought the first one years ago b/c we liked the technology. Then, we stopped using our gas car when we stopped going to 2 offices during the pandemic. Neither one of us wanted to go back to the gas car, so we replaced it with another Tesla. They weren't really more expensive than plenty of other cars. I live in Arlington and see so many of them on the road. The number of Cayennes on the road surprise me.
