How about you stop checking on your kids grades every five minutes? The rolling gradebook defaults to 0.

I'm not talking about my kid. I'm talking about kid who have parents who won't be inclined to email teachers and ask. Parents who are just going to react badly. And you know they exist. I just hope that's not the case for any kids in my child's two classes. They might have a miserable weekend just because the teacher pre-filled assignments with 0s.

+1 I used to volunteer with a prevent Child abuse charity in Alexandria. Before everything was online, the charity would print out little reminder notes to include w/ report cards bc there was a consistent trend of abuse happening when report cards came out

You all have some high strung kids. Have them talk to their teacher.

No. It happened to my kid too. I didn’t blow a gasket and did ask. I believed her explanation, but I was concerned. She needs to not completely tank grades with senioritis before they go to colleges. And it was a major project that pulled her down from an A- to a C+. She has ADHD. Hasn’t missed an assignment all year. But, it certainly could be her fault.

I find it weird. And I'm a teacher.

Two possibilities come to mind:
1 - assignments don't show in progress report if there's no grade or mark for it. Maybe teacher wants the kids to see what all upcoming assignments are that will need to be completed before end of year? However, there's ways to do this without putting in zeros so this is probably unlikely.

2 - it's seniors and the teacher wants to make it clear that if you slack now, this is what all those zeros will do to your grade. More likely, but still, there are other ways to go about this (e.g. meet with the ones at high risk and show them in real time how putting in zeros will mess up their grade and then.... Delete them after you get your point across)

I can't think of any other reason why a teacher would do this.

Clearly it has happened to multiple people here. Teachers need to understand the possible ramifications.

Also a teacher here, although in a different county and agree, this doesn’t make sense at all.

I’ve never seen or heard of this. It’s my 23rd year teaching and I have two kids of my own. It’s usually the opposite. Past due and missing assignments are left blank to avoid the missing 50 grade. It’s more on us now to justify low grades, especially this close to graduation.

The 50% thing is new and may not have been the case when your DD was in HS.
