I traveled in the summer to competitions with band routines. They would find a local school and we would sleep on the gymnasium floor with a sleeping bag. Now as an adult I can really appreciate the adults who accompanied us because they were on the hard floor too. It didn’t bother me as a kid but at my age now, there’s no way I could do it.

If your child is sleeping on a bunkbed with a mattress, an egg crate/mattress pad is not necessary.

Shipping to the camp is ridiculous. Have your child be responsible for their own stuff.

There's a whole decorate-your-bunk thing that existed even back in the 80s when I went. This is just part of it.

decorating is one thing, but an egg crate is not decoration.

exactly, my kid did two weeks of sleep away camp last year and this never would have occurred to me. It also seems like a very bulky thing to pack.

Make sure your camp allows them. Ours doesn't.

My camp doesn’t give us mattresses. It’s bring an egg crate or sleep on wood.
