Maybe back in the 1950’s they were standard. When high school was generally the end of the kid’s academic career and certainly before the kids and parents had social media pages that announced the event worldwide and immediately!!
It is seen as a money-grab now.

I graduated in 93 in California and no one sent them--except as a gift grab

Graduated in 1994 from a Virginia HS and they were sent. Now have a DC graduating next month and nope not sending them, also didn’t do a big SM to do, personally OR on the parent page for the college he’s attending. We’re in the Charlottesville area.

My kids are only in elementary and I have never received one of these. I think people post on social media?
We have been to graduation parties and I’m happy to give the graduate a $100 bill and a nice card.
