Maybe back in the 1950’s they were standard. When high school was generally the end of the kid’s academic career and certainly before the kids and parents had social media pages that announced the event worldwide and immediately!!
It is seen as a money-grab now.

We didn’t have a lot of family or friends to send them to, but I ordered the smallest batch and mom helped me collect addresses. Grandparents, aunts & uncles, and a couple of my parents’ friends who had known me since I was little. I didn’t send them to my Dad’s coworkers or my mom’s book club or anything, although I remember my parents getting announcements for kids I’d never heard of, and even mom & dad were pretty vague about.
Was this just a Southern thing? Or did it used to be everywhere, and social media is now making it obsolete?

You want the truth, OP? I would resent you for it. It’s 2022
There’s a trash can for a reason. Nobody would miss you if you jumped in it with the announcement.
True but my opinion of you as a mother would go in the trash with the announcement.
Something tells me people don't really care about your opinion of them as a mother.
And many thinks tell me you do care. Otherwise you wouldn’t keep trying to convince me that you don’t care.
Who is trying to convince you of anything? You should drunk. Put the wine down dear.

To those who think they are tacky? toss them. Or gift grabs? Toss them and don't send a thing. Seriously some people are the worst.
