James sounds very structured and boring. Daniel is more neutral but has an inclination to have fun and engage in adventures.

Dan definitely but I don’t know if this generation even knows that Jim is a nickname for James. All the little James’ I know go by James or Jamie.

Most of the Jim's I know started going by Jim later, like high school/college. So I think its still popular, just doesn't catch on when they are little. I've seen the same thing happen with Robert---Robbie/Bobby--Rob/Bob.

James.

Daniel is my loser BIL.

Like them both, but prefer Daniel.

They're both good! I prefer James and DH prefers Daniel. James is the English variant of Jacob and Daniel is Hebrew so I wouldn't say one is more American than the other.

I hate Daniel and think it’s wimpy.

Daniel. And I think Daniel sounds better with an Italian name.

You’re not going to get a consensus on this, OP. I love both names.

If I had to pick one it would be Daniel. Danny is a great nickname.

Love James but can't stand Daniel

I really love both names, but I have a Daniel (current high school senior.)
I don't think you could go wrong with either.

James is more classic American / English. Think about the nickname, do you like Jimmy?

I like Daniel, that’s my son’s middle name

No one ever shortens his name either. Not so say it will never happen, but it's not automatic like some names seems to be. I think the one syllable thing cuts some of it off.

I also have a James, and no one shortens his name.
