The pandemic, BLM, Trump, now the war in Russia - it's made my children re-prioritize what's important. FWIW, I graduated from HS in 1994 and never went to a prom.

My senior DD decided not to go this year. For homecoming she went with a group of girls and later I learned they didn’t even go to the official event! Just got dressed up, went out to dinner, changed into sweats and watched a movie together.

The emails from the school about prom were funny, though - they were practically begging people to attend.

Prom is basically an over produced, expensive school dance. The people screaming about "OMG OUR KIDS MISSING PROM!!" were moms who peaked in high school. Few kids in 2022 care that much.

My kid’s friends are all going to prom, most without dates. Maybe OP’s experience isn’t universal?

My kids didn't want to have to pay so much money for the prom. It's $90 plus the cost of dress/suit and dinner. They couldn't imagine prom being any more fun than homecoming was.

Uh, you can ask someone to prom without all the hooplah. My kid did.

If you look at the stats they actually aren’t doing it. So much less sex and dating going on now than when we were kids.

Didn't happen. None of these boys make the ask until they have clearly gotten yes in advance. Yes, it's stupid, but nobody is getting publicly humiliated

I went to my prom with friends but eh? It's mediocre food and a pretty boring dance. It's really just an excuse to dress up. I'm not sorry I went but had I not gone it wouldn't have been a big deal. My boyfriend and I had already broken up because we were going to different colleges.
