we didn't room together the first year, but ended up sharing a house for most of the rest of college and are still great friends 20 years later. I'm actually glad that we didn't the first year bc, as others said, we ended up meeting more people that way.

My DD and her best friend applied to the same school and agreed right from the outset that they'd have different roommates, so that they could expand their friend groups together. They didn't end up at the same school but I thought that was the way to go.

How do you tell a friend without hurting their feelings that you don’t want to share a room with them?

Please, please don’t do this. I had constant roommate issues—I suppose that’s my personality—and switched rooms once during freshman year and practically abandoned my room when my second roommate arrangement was unsuccessful. I can’t imagine killing a friendship over that!

I suggest they could at least review the roommate questions together to see if they are comparable and for them to be honest and talk it out. If they are, have them discuss the pros and cons. Then they decide.

2 of my kids roomed with good HS friends, one went random. All worked out. Then again, they were all boys so probably less drama.

Not a good idea. They will stick to themselves and not make friends. My dd had hall mates her freshman year that were HS besties who roomed together. They did everything together and did not socialize with others on the hall. By the end of the year they were no longer besties and starting over when others had already established friend groups.

Good friends don’t always make good roommate.
It is hard to tell without knowing if they have the same habit when it comes to cleanness, sleep, study and visitors .
